I noticed my 1st edition airport express has a USB port on for printing.

If I plug in a HDD / Flash drive, is there anyway to turn it into a wireless hard drive, like the other airport extremes?

Thanks

Didn't this use to be a feature of the Airport Express? Is this just a case of Apple wanting to hold on tightly to the Time Capsule market?

You're probably getting confused with the Extreme's initial inability to use AirDisk for Time Machine - which, whether intentional or not, has been fixed but still officially unsupported by Apple. Either that or the instruction manual blunder that stated that the Express could share a USB hard drive (which has since been fixed). Either way, no. Express USB is for printers only.
