I was wondering if I can use the usb port on my airport express for anything else (like accessing a usb harddrive remotely) or is it just restricted to a printer?

Apple has crippled (designed and supports) it to just be a print server, and allow a small number of USB devices to connect to it.
You can use it to charge USB devices, like phones or an iPod shuffle.

I try to take as few adapters with me when I travel as possible. I use my AE to charge my iPod and my phone. I could just as easily charge these through my PB, but the iPod wont charge while the computer is asleep, while the phone will.

Other devices: IR Remote, and I there was something else, but I can't remember what also worked through the USB port.
