I don't know a way to hide other networks' SSIDs, but hiding the SSID is not securing your network any more than doing it not.

what do you mean by "not see any others out there"?
the only time i look at the network list is if i'm in a new place.
is your computer connecting to the wrong network?
go into network preferences, select the airport, then click advanced.
you can then remove networks you automatically connect to that you don't want to,
or re-order your connection preference, just drag your network to the top of the list (networks closer to the top take priority).
