Is this worth buying if I am just using it as a wireless router? I am told the Extreme is the same minus the more direct connections. Is this true?

Not exactly.

The Extreme has a greater range, it has Gigabit Ethernet ports (and more of them as you mentioned), and can share a USB HDD as well as a printer using the USB port. The Extreme is also missing the audio jack to use for AirPlay.

Airport Express

So if im using it as a pure router for my apt in NYC which would be best?

Will you be hardwiring anything or are you strictly using Wi-Fi?

If you need fast Ethernet connections, or more than one Ethernet port, then the Extreme. But if you're only using wireless devices, or only one wired device that doesn't require Gigabit speeds, then the Express would suit your needs. The coverage is great for an apartment and would be cheaper than the Extreme.
