I am looking at getting an airport extreme along with an external hard drive. My idea is to use the external hard drive as network storage along with a time machine drive for my MacBook Pro. Is it possible to partition the external drive with one partition being for network storage and the other for time machine?

Thanks in advance.

Yep.

Does this mean that we can create our own custom "time capsule" this way? So our computer will backup automatically over Wifi?

Some people have been able to make this happen, but it is not supported by Apple. I messed around with it for a while, and it was flaky at best. Sometimes it would back up, sometimes not. I use the drive for NAS now, and then at night I place my computer next to the AEBS and plug the drive in directly for TM.
