I'm in the market for a new Airport Extreme as I currently use an Airport Express (bought 9/2012) with a 2nd gen Airport Extreme as a wireless extender. I find that most of my devices are favoring the 2.4 spectrum and I get daily pauses in web use and/or streaming that makes me think my current setup is not ideal.

With an iPhone 6 and Retina Macbook Pro, I should be able to take advantage of the 802.11ac and use a new Extreme as the main station with the Express acting as an extender.

The only issue I have is the current Extreme was released in June 2013 and there are other routers coming out with newer (better?) chipsets for the wireless signal and maximizing throughput (i.e. MU-MIMO)

Any thoughts on where the current Extreme stands and thoughts on a new one coming soon?

I do not predict a new AirPort until at least mid 2015. That being said, the current Extreme is fantastic and very capable.

the AE and TC will handle all of these thoroughput variations.

2.4 GHz with 802.11n 2x2 antennas = 300 Mbps
2.4 GHz with 802.11n 3x3 antennas = 450 Mbps
2.4 GHz with 802.11ac 3x3 antennas = 600 Mbps
5 GHz with 802.11ac 2x2 antennas = 900 Mbps
5 GHz with 802-11ac 3x3 antennas = 1300 Mbps

iPad air 2x2 MIMO
Haswell Mac 3x3 MIMO
