AirPort Extreme 802.11n no route to host

Hi, I have a AirPort Extreme 802.11n router with the latest firmware installed. My setup is such that my laptop is connected to the router via ethernet and my iPhone is connected via wifi, both using the same subnet, router address and dns address. The problem I'm having is that while my laptop is connected via ethernet it can ping and access file sharing services on my iPhone, but when my laptop is connected via wifi the iPhone is not reachable and pings return a "no route to host". I've looked at the traffic via wireshark and the only thing I see when trying to do direct wifi to wifi communications is that the arp request for the identity of the iPhone's IP is never answered. Is this a limitation of the airport extreme base station or is there a setting somewhere I need to change in order for wifi to wifi communication to work? Also note that the same problem was experienced with another laptop also running Leopard and connected to the network via wifi (both running 10.5.5) so this is not a local problem with my laptop software environment.
