I have an xbox 360 elite (2010 version) and just recently bought an airport extreme.
I have them connected through an ethernet cable, but I can't sign into xbox live. I have had no trouble with my old router (a linksys), and am thinking it might be a router configuration problem.
Any suggestions?
thanks

You need to set up the "port forwarding" in your router. Ideally also set up an internal static IP address for your xbox.

For example:
  1. configure your airport extreme to only assign DHCP addresses in a limited range, for example 10.0.1.80 through 10.0.1.90.
  2. pick an IP outside this range, say 10.0.1.100, and configure your xbox to use a static IP with DHCP using this 10.0.1.100 address.
  3. set up port forwarding to forward: port "88", protocol "UDP" to port "88" on "10.0.1.100". (This allows outside UDP network traffic on port "88" to be delivered to your xbox on port "88".)
  4. also set up port forwarding to forward: port "3074", protocol "both" to port "3074" on "10.0.1.100". (This allows outside network traffic on port "3074" to be delivered to your xbox on port "3074".)

To make this configuration reliable, the key is to have your xbox configured with a static IP. Otherwise the port forwards would need to keep being updated each time the xbox gets a different internal network IP.

thanks for the quick response.
How would I go about doing this?
Sorry I'm a total noob at networking :)
