I have just got an external hard drive for my my airport extreme and it is all working great, but I was wondering is there is a way to auto mount a volume when i login or open a application or without fussing around in the finder.

When you installed the utilities that came with the Airport Extreme, it should have installed an Airport Disk utility application. This application should allow you to set up your external disks to auto mount when you sign on.
The app is located in the utilities folder under applications.
