airport extreme custom firmware

Is it possible to load custom firmware to apple airport extreme like dd-wrt or tomato ? since I want to install a torrent client on my setup.

Get a NAS, they have a number of download managers.

As long as you don't ask for a WLAN access point/router, that's exactly what a NAS is built for.
PS I think AirPort Extreme doesn't have internal juice left for much anything above what it's doing already. CPU power might not even be a issue here, but RAM and Flash storage are.

It doesn't work like that - what you want is a Buffalo Linkstation and connect your hard drives either internally or via USB.
