I currently use a Dlink DGL-4300 Wireless G gaming router. I don't really do much gaming anymore besides occassional PC or Xbox 360 and I'd like to upgrade to wireless N so I'm considering Airport Extreme. Here's the devices I have:
-- Vista based PC running hardwired ethernet
-- Intel 2.8GHZ 24" iMac running hardwired gigabit ethernet
-- Pentium 4 XP based PC running hardwired ethernet
-- Hardwired ethernet for Xbox 360
-- Hardwired ethernet for Vonage (this is not currently connected but planned)
-- Wireless for PSP/Laptops
I currently use a Dell 10/100 16 Port Ethernet Switch to catch the wired overflow. I would like to leave the current devices that are wired as wired, but future devices I will most likely be wireless (such as my iPod Touch coming in the mail).
My question is, how well does the Airport Extreme play with switches? Can I replace the DGL-4300 with an Airport Extreme, and then connect the switch to one of the 3 gigabit ethernet ports, leaving the other two for the iMac & Vonage? I figured out of everything those two devices were probably the most important. Or should I buy a gigabit unmanaged Dell 16 port switch to use with the above?
Another thought I had was to run a ethernet cable from the switch down to the other end of the house (aprox~40ft) and putting the DGL-4300 on the end of it to have a second wireless network as well as 4 more ports I can use to connect the Xbox 360.
