I've been using an Airport Extreme 6th generation connected to a bridged Airport Extreme 5th generation via Powerline networking for a few months now, and it has been working wonderfully... up until a few days ago. The AE 6th generation was showing a green light but wasn't having any traffic go through. Devices could still connect to its wifi network, but anything connected via ethernet indicated that the IP was self-assigned. Rebooting the router allowed wireless traffic to access the internet again, but didn't do anything for the ethernet ports. Ultimately, I had to do a factory reset, and then the ethernet ports started working again. I reloaded my old configuration and it was no problem. They continued to work for about 48 hours, but then the same symptoms started again, where nothing would work unless I rebooted it.

The only changes that I can think of deal with my ISP, which recently sent out notices that they would be running updates on cable modems over the past few weeks. But I don't really see how updates to a cable modem (pure cable modem, not a modem-router) should cause my router to fail in that manner.

I've looked around for this issue and it seems like people's ethernet ports generally fail fully, usually due to some electrical failure. Having ports that sort-of come back seems to me like we're on the path to full failure... but before I go out and replace the router, I figured I'd put it out there to ask if anyone else has encountered something similar, and if there's something specific that can be done to resolve the issue.

What I'd try:
Power down all computers.
Pull out the plug for the cable modem, plug it back in.
Let everything "come back up".
See if that helps.

Thanks for the reply. Everything works, but it doesn't sustain - the ethernet goes out after 24-48 hours. Nothing has changed in the configuration. Just trying to figure out if this sounds like impending hardware failure or if others have had similar issues due to... something.
