I just picked up 6th gen Airport Extreme and I want to hook up a couple of hard drives to it. I'm reading that this can be done by attaching the hard drives to a USB hub, then plugging in the hub into the AE.

I've also been told on a separate occasion that I would need to daisy chain the hard drives.

Which is the correct and most efficient way of going about this?

Thanks!

You do not daisy chain USB hard drives. If you would like to attach multiple USB devices to your Airport Extreme, use a (preferably powered) hub. See: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5924

Thanks for the link and information!

One of the two hard drives I want to connect has it's own power supply, while the other hard drive does not. Will a powered USB hub that plugs into an electrical outlet take care of the HD that doesn't have it's own power supply?

Not if it's a 3.5" drive.

You may need to plug to 2 ports for a 2.5" drive, with a Y USB cable, if it's too hungry.

A powered USB hub should power a portable USB hard drive. Remember to use the separate power supply with the other drive.
