Airport Extreme just for back up?

I recently moved in with some friends. They have their home network set up and everything. I used my Airport Extreme with a USB 1TB external for backing up/storage. Is there a way to hook up my AE just to use for backing up purposes? Or does it need to run an internet connection to run, and if so, can I run it along side the current home network? And just hide and use for my backing up?
