Airport Extreme Latency Issues

I have been having issues for a couple weeks now and have narrowed it down to my airport extreme. Let me start by saying I have done testing from my Linux box wired, PC wired and MBP both wired and wireless and they all have the same issue so I am sure it has nothing to do with the wireless part of the network. I have tried to remedy the issue with lots of restarts and tried to upload the same firmware again but nothing seems to help. The only time it is better is right after a restart, the first few pings/traceroutes are always normal speed but within 10-30 seconds it's back to extreme delays again.

Here are the traceroutes that I have done now that I have it narrowed down, done some with airport and some without, definitely something with the airport.

Other router/direct connect are always ~10ms ping to the second hop:

With Airport times are always 350-800ms:

Anyone seen this or have any other ideas to save me a trip to the genius bar?

Having the same issue. Initial ping at 24 ms degrading to 1700 ms or worse on subsequent pings. If I substitute a Linksys router, all pings return at 24 ms.

Have you resoved this? I'm thinking the AE router is toast.

I have done the same trace routes, and actually, I also happened to have a time capsule (that also is an AE router) and I subbed in the Time Capsule as the primary router (instead of the AE Base Station), and I am still experiencing the latency! I have tried the firm ware toggles that you mentioned.

SO.... what did you do to resolve your issue? I know you original post was a couple of years ago, but please reply and let me know!

The local Apple store comp'd me a refurb AE router even though the original was out-of-warranty---I'd purchased a MacPro server earlier in the year. That seems to have resolved the issue. Still have to reboot the cable modem from time to time when web pages seem slow to load.
If you've subbed a second router and still have the same problem, I'd suspect your service provider is at fault. Try a third and known-good router to confirm and then have your ISP investigate.

Airport Latency issues

I also went to the Apple store (yesterday 1/6/11) and they swapped out my out of warranty router. (That was impressive BTW). I brought it home, and I have the same issue. Today I installed an older NetGear that I had in the garage, and the latency issue, at least in the past hour or so, has gone away.

This may seem weird, but have you tried moving the airport to a different location (ideally not inside anything) and completely reset both your ISP and Airport router? You don't have Uverse do you?
