I've been considering buying an Airport Express as a wireless way to connect to my stereo. But I have a few questions:

1). Will the AE allow me to play CDs from my computer onto my stereo (not just files within iTunes)?

2). The AE will not itself be connected to the internet, and I don't have an Airport base-station. Will it still be able to stream? Will it extend the network of a non-Apple base station?

I see no reason why it wouldn't stream CD's. I believe it simply streams whatever is playing in iTunes. Also, it did work with extending the range of my Belkin router.

1) Yes, if the CD is played from iTunes (or if you install AirFoil, or whatever it's called, from any applications).

2) You can stream music to the AE without being connected to the internet. I don't think the AE can be used for extending the signal from all 3rd party routers/base stations, but someone might have found a way round that by now...
