I recently purchased an Airport Extreme base station and attempted to set-up the wireless network in my house last night with some success but not complete success. The network is behaving strangely and I’m wondering if anyone can give me some guidance. I’ve search this site and seen some posts that describe similar but not exactly the same type of behavior from their Airport Extreme.
Network Hardware:
DSL modem
Airport Extreme
One iMac desktop sitting about 2 feet from the AE
One macbook roaming the house
2 iPhones
2 iPod Touches
Networks Setup:
Primary Network
Guest Network
Symptoms:
iMac and MB see the Primary Network and Guest Network but can only log onto Guest Network. When attempting to log onto Primary network I get either “wrong password” usually on the first try then on following attempts to log on I get “connection timed out”. I was able to log onto the Primary network once with the iMac but never again after that.
iPhone and iPod will randomly see either: both networks or either just the primary network or the guest network or neither network. Sometimes they will permit me to log on and other times they won’t to either network but most of the time it won’t let me on the Primary network. Also last night my iPhone would cycle between the primary network and the guest network every 20 seconds or so. I just sat there and watched it cycle in the Choose Network section of the WiFi Networks screen of the settings section. .
As for the primary network I’ve confirmed my password numerous times in the Airport Utilities so I know I’m typing the same password I set in Airport Utilities. I’ve run through the Airport Utilities setup several times.
One other thing I should mention is that every device displays my neighbors Linksys’s locked network.
Could this be a channel issue? I’ve read some posts that talk about that but I’m not sure how one changes the channels.
I should mention that I'm using 10.5 on both Macs. Also as I type this the guest network is working but if I go into the Airport Utilities it says it is unable to locate any Apple wireless devices yet I'm on the network.
