Now that plugging a hard drive for time machine into the airport extreme is supported, has anyone experimented with plugging hard drives into a switch elsewhere on their network?

Is it supported?

Only USB connected drives are supported by the Extreme directly. You can use a powered USB hub to connect them in a chain. If the hard drive is connected over Ethernet then Time Machine support is on the manufacturer of that equipment.
