looking to pick up an AirPort Extreme but was wondering if they might be upgrading them since they haven't been in awhile. Has anyone heard anything in regards to this?

Just curious....upgrading what aspect? You thinking wifi spec, USB ports would USB 3.0 or 3.1...using USB-C connectors?

Well I believe the extreme is already running AC so you can't get a faster protocol. Upgrading in terms of usb, better antenna technology...etc.

Anyone know how many years this version has been around for?

The Sixth Generation Airport Extreme was introduced in June 2013, has a form factor of 4" by 4" square, six and a half inches high. It introduced the Wireless-AC standard, does beam forming with three antennae in each of the 2.4GHz and 5 GHz bands. It can transmit and receive in each band simultaneously.

Been checking around and haven't seen any news about an update. Anyone hear anything?

Not even worth worrying about. Just get one now and in a few years when you don't have a single USB 3 or lower drive to attach to your Airport, and your devices are on a future version of Wi-Fi, you can consider getting another one to extend your network or just sell the current model for a small discount.
