Airport Extreme won't connect to internet

I've had this simultaneous dual band APX for a while now and have just been overlooking this problem, but now I really just want to resolve it. Basically it will not connect to the internet when plugged directly into our cable modem. In order for it to work, I have to leave our old Belkin wireless router plugged in between the APX and cable modem. Anyone else seen this problem?

I bought one of these at the weekend and ran into a similar problem when I set it up. Powering off the cable modem and Airport Extreme, then powering on the CM and waiting for the solid tick and then powering on the AE seemed to do the trick.

The issue was that the AE wasn't getting the IP from the CM. Make sure that the AE's IP address is set to DHCP (going from memory).
