I am trying to share a Hitachi Touro 2tb external hd (FAT32) using my Airport Extreme base station. I can't get the hd to appear in the disks section of the Airport utility though. When I attach a WD 250GB FAT32 drive to the Airport it is recognized immediately.

I've tried using both powered and non-powered USB hubs without success. Plugging the hd directly into the Airport didn't work either. The hd functions fine when plugged into a USB port on 3 other computers so it doesn't appear to be a hd issue. I've reset the Airport with and without the hd attached but no success in getting the hd to appear. I followed all of the instructions in Apple's Airport support section but no luck.

All my pc's are running on XP Pro (service pack3). The Airport Extreme is working flawlessly except for this one particular issue which, unfortunately, was one of the main reasons I purchased it. I've looked through numerous discussions already in the forums and tried some suggestions such as attempting to map the drive using the airport's IP address but still no luck.

A friend suggested I format the drive to MacOS Extended but I don't have a Mac. He also cautioned that this solution may not allow programs running on the PCs to use the external HD as their database location due to needing a read/write interface. I'm not familiar with Mac OS so I can only take his word for it.

Does anyone here have any suggestions for how I can get the Airport to recognize the Hitachi Touro or perhaps tell me what I'm missing in the set-up process?
