Im so impressed with airport extreme
I installed my card last night and came to school today. I was parked in an unkown parking lot when I noticed my airport status bar has bars flashing!!!

BAMO!!!! Internet!! High Speed
Downloading at about 60k a second, Dont know whos network this is but its goin!

Kick ass!!
Way to go Apple..
At first I thought, why would I want an airport extreme card, but got one anyways...

Now I am very happy!!

Yeah, I love stumbling across unencrypted networks. The other night I was visiting my grandmother. She lives in an apartment, and I found 2 unencrypted networks. Worse, I noticed one of them was a linksys router, and having one myself, I know the setup IP. I typed that in, and it asked for a password, so I typed in the default password, and bam! I was in. I could have set up a WEP key on the guys setup so he couldn't access it himself! But, I restrained myself. I'm a nice guy, plus I wanted to keep the network open for next time.

It just amazes me that people don't know they need to lock wireless routers and access points when they set them up.

My understanding is that its not unless you start d/ling massive amounts of porn or doing something stupid like messing with the persons settings. Yeah its kinda sad how people dont change their admins but some people dont bother. Check out wardriving.com for more tips.

Speaking of Linksys, I've observed a couple things from my small number of wardriving experiments. 1.) About 80% of people with wireless networks use Linksys. 2.) 99% of them run it using defaults. Default channel, password, name, everything. Not very responsible.

What is the cheapest... yest good quality base station I can buy for airport extreme?
Linksys?
Netgear?
802.11g

I personally like Linksys. Their products look clean, have a good config interface, and provide excellent reception. I've setup many Linksys setups for people, and have never heard any complaints. I believe people have had good look with Netgear as well though.

-Please excuse me if this is a stupid question....but, I live in a pretty big apartment building. If someone in there has a wireless router/network for their internet service and I happen to be sitting in my apartment with my airport extreme equipped 12"pb without my own personal internet service, will I be able to go online on their dime?? (for now I'll nevermind all of the moral and ethical issues of doing this-I'm just curious....and I speak of my hypothetical 12" pb until I get some more scratch)

Yes you can, and I dont think it's illegal. If you go to techtv.com/thescreensavers they have tips on picking up WiFi signals.

I prefer D-Link wireless routers. Must simpler config and better operation IMO.

If youre sitting in your house and pickup a wireless signal, it will be very obvious. Your airport meter will register a signal or the network ill appear in the list. I can walk into any of my friends homes and log into their wireless networks within 5 seconds.

Well, picked the the Linsys WRT54G for 119 Canadian today, cheapest 802.11 g I could find.
I cam home and hooked it up to a wired pc, then hooked up my wired mac, and then set up wireless for my iBook with airport extreme!

The Linksys was a breeze to set-up, a first seemed a little intimidating but bascially did it all for me. Even set up nice 128 bit Encryption for my wireless!

Everything is running amazing!
iBook wireless seems to run the fastest. Get good reception throughout ever bit of the house.

Very Happy!
I am glad I picked up the airport extreme off eBay. I would have been missing a whole amazing part of my mac...

So Cool

That's a good price. I just got mine for $140, though there is supposed to be a $15 mail-in rebate mailed to me (acrobat wasn't working on the PC they had at the register at London Drugs). ;)

It replaces my old linksys 4-port wired router. Love it. I'd recommend getting the latest firmware update as it really improves the router admin pages. Note that you'll have to re-enable your wireless security settings and such.

yeah, i upgraded the firmware.
Im very happy with my purchase today..
