My airport status sits on the top bar on my screen. Currently it is displaying an icon that looks like a little square, quite possibly a computer, where the wireless service bars should be. Can anybody tell me what this means? Thank you!

That icon sounds like you're connected to a computer in ad-hoc mode.

If you click on the AirPort icon, you should see a list of available networks, possibly broken down into regular wireless networks and computer-to-computer networks. You're currently connected to a computer-to-computer network. Just click on your university's wireless network name to connect to that instead.
