Airport on MP slow

I have a 2008 MP with an airport card. When I connect the computer via ethernet to an airport N that is linked wirelessly to my Time Capsule, the throughput to my MP is much faster than when I link to the Time Capsule through the airport card on the MP. Is there any way to tell whether both antennas are connected on the airport card? What else could the problem be? I get a all the bars on my airport connection.
