I have just got an Airport base station, but my modem is a DSL that connects via USB not Ethernet.

Apple told me that that wouldn't be a problem, but it doesn't seem to work.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it, or what is going wrong?

Are you sure there is no Cat5 connector in the back of your DSL?

I'd really try to see if there is a way you can connect with Cat5.

The DSL modems I've seen have at least that, and a USB conector in addition.

Another option would be a USB to Cat5 adapter.
