Airport stopped detecting network; after restart icon in Menu Bar disappeared.

My wife just got through with my Macbook, put it to sleep, and handed it to me. I opened it up, and there was no Airport connection. I restarted the whole system, and then there was no network icon in the Menu Bar.

I went to Internet Connect, and it told me there was no Airport hardware detected.

Is something terribly wrong, or do I have a fighting chance to save it?
