Airport Utility hanging in leopard

i just bought a brand new airport express. i'm running leopard on a MBP CoreDuo. when i open airport utility, i can select the express and hit continue to configure it, it then says "reading base station configuration," and never stops. is there any explanation for this? i've waited for a half hour or so with no change. thanks
