Airport went bad in newer Macbook bought USB Adapter how do I get it to work?

So I bought a wifi adapter for my mate after his broke, and I m trying to install it. I turn off airport, connect via USB and I can't figure out from there. The more-info screen shows me the name of the adapter and I can see other people have made it work but I can't figure how to get the external adapter to work.

Any ideas?


OSX 10.5.5

BTW I use linux on a regular basis so Terminal based commands are fine.
