heres the situation

I pick up a public wifi here at my house and it is not password protected. I can access it on my iPhone 3GS without any problems but when I try connecting on my Macbook in airport i either get a message saying connection timed out or it will connect (airport wifi icon will display full bars) but there will be no connectivity and i cant use the internet when connected

the messed up part, I think, is that I can even access this network on my iphone and use the personal hotspot to use this connection thru the macbook (which might make this post sound obsolete)

but i would like to figure out a way to simply connect to this wifi on my macbook without using my iphone hotspot

bear in mind i am not technically literate... but my brother was able to access and use this wifi on his Windows laptop. so i feel like it is something specific to my macbook, a setting or something.

any ideas?
