One advantage these might have over Tile is if by default iPhones notify the service when they are near an AirTag. This could be helpful with a lost item, as there are a lot more iPhones out there than Tile users.
So if you mark an item/AirTag as lost and a stranger's iPhone enters within the AirTag's range, you will get a notification and GPS location. Having the huge iPhone base searching for your item would make AirTags worth the extra cost.

doesn't the iphone pay for things, hold pictures and start cars and open doors? who needs a wallet and keys. ;)

My guess they will be a little larger than a standard lithium battery, round and the battery will be the lithium replaceable. And the iPhone or iPad will tell you how much battery you have left on the and it is time to replace it before the battery runs out. It will scream at you, replace me before i die please!!!!!!!!

So a little larger than a quarter or maybe a half dollar.

Amazing. They'll get these things to work but still can't figure out how to make a wireless charger.

Apple needs to put one of these in the Siri Remote.

I wonder if they might become a hazard for infants and toddlers.

At least you won't lose them.

The AR feature would be a killer for me as my directional hearing isn't that great. Sometimes I go looking for my wife's keys with Tile and even though it's making noise I'm not certain where in the room.

How does the range work? It's only able to be seen in your phones effective BT range?

What will happen if I lose an item that has an AirTag?

Based on code found in iOS 13, if you lose an item that has an AirTag on it, you'll get a notification on your iPhone.

Wow, it knows when it’s lost and notifies me? Excellent.

I'm really excited by the prospect of these - something I haven't had for a few years with Apple. Potentially a first day purchase for me.

There are so many possibilities - keys, dog, cat, bag, car (concealed in case it gets stolen)...etc. Hopefully they aren't too expensive that it's feasible to buy multiple.

I love the idea of how it works by pinging strangers devices. It kinda sounds concerning, but thinking it through, it's an invisible process to the user/stranger.

Wonder how many marriages will end with a husband or wife tracks the other?
I think that's already happened with Find My (Friends). No need for one of these tags for that.

Judging by that main pic - they look delicious.
Every time I see that pic, I am moved to eat them.

(They probably won't look quite like that though - with no flat surface they'd be hard to secure to anything.)

I've said it before, but I use power tools by Festool which come in modular boxes called "systainers". After a while these all start to look the same and when I am looking for a particular sander, router, circular saw or planer, I need to keep looking at the fine print on the boxes to see which systainer contains the tool I need, only to find out I left it in another room (after a lot of prolonged searching in the wrong room).
If I could look for example the "planer" and the airtags shows me a balloon in my office (or in the garage), I can follow it to the numerous piles of systainers and focus my attention to the stack with the balloon floating over it. This ability to find these similar packaged but very unique items will be a God-send for my woodworking and productivity.
I could also see popping one of these in a rental car while on vacation to find my car at a theme park parking lot! :)

Once these come out, the following generation of the Apple TV will have this tech embedded into the Apple TV remote. Find My Remote. Just wait and see.... 😊

Anyone else surprised by AirPods Pro, and now possibly AirTags, being released without a keynote address? These are tentpole releases, not the kind of "minor updates" that normally fly under the radar.

Tim Apple - Let's get a November event on the calendar!

On the other hand, if iPhone is lost, I think the damage is also big. Very big. It is still a bad idea to let keys cards etc controlled by a device that is equally easy to get lost.

I have a hard time believing they'll be shaped like Mentos as shown in the mock-up picture. Pretty hard to stick that shape to anything because the contact point is pretty small. Seems like a disk would be a better choice for adhesion.

Exactly. These mockups/renderings are shaped like something "ergonomic" which would feel nice in hand - which these tags may never be in. I suppose the attachment (aka "base?") could be a neat bit of engineering, but without a keyring/loop hole or a flat, stackable outer surface, the lozenge shape seems like an industrial design fail waiting to happen.

Not at all. I am SO over the drama of the big events with the 'keynote' type reveals. Just update it and let us get the parts we want (sitting out 2019 completely) and move on. I'm gonna puke if I hear Schiller, Cook and the cameo parade of unknown, yet diverse Apple employees hawking "incredible" and "amazing" products that are significantly less than.
