Leathal or Big Boss or anyone...

I cannot for the love of me find what these devices do.
I don't even know what to call them.
This make it hard to find out in SIMPLE terms what they do and when I would need them.

Seeing as I am getting into film making as a serious hobbie, I would love a explanation or link that explains what these devices do.

They're called 'capture cards' or 'video I/Os'. They enable you to capture video from a professional video deck and send your edited show back out to one. They also allow you to hook up a professional video monitor and view the actual video signal, not one that's been turned into the computer signal you'd see playing in Quicktime on your iMac.

The IoHD also, uniquely, transcodes to ProRes within the box. This is useful if you want to record a high-quality live picture but your MacBook Pro is too slow to be able to transcode reliably.

BAM!
There's what I am looking for!
Thank you so much!

right now my video card wont allow me to have a 2nd monitor with out problems. the only reason I want a 2nd monitor is for preview in FCP and COLOR.

Would one of these cards be good for COLOR too?
