I purchased an Akitio Thunder Dock at their on line store for $249 & I was charged $19.92 for what they call a Federal Tax. Anyone heard of this tax? I buy online frequently and have been never charged this tax.

That pencils out to exactly California's 8% sales tax and I see they are in Brea California. What state did you ship to?

Looks like BS to me. They're collecting 8% tax for any order. I just added an item to cart from their store, the total shown had the tax already included and I had not even provided my address yet!

Better off ordering it through Amazon.

It is BS.. I went to their storefront and added it and before I filled anything out they added "tax"..Something we don't pay in Oregon.

You can get it from Amazon for the "pre-tax" price of $249.

To be fair to them they do not call it a Federal Tax.

Us Oregonians don't pay any State Sales Tax. We're on the hook for other applicable taxes.

I just tested the site myself, and it seems to add the 8% tax regardless of the ship-to state. I'd call them out on it immediately. Hopefully it was just a test gone wrong...

You also have PowerMax - one of the last who will ship authorized Apple product with no tax. Purchased several from them in the last few years. When it's a 2-3k plus order, waiting a few extra days is worth it. We're talkin' a few hundred bucks in tax.

When I ordered my rMBP from MacMall, they wanted to charge sales tax as they had a business presence in our state. So I had them ship to my niece in a state next door where they had no presence.... and therefore no sales tax charged.

In the fall many states will have a tax free weekend when clothes, computers and other items are sold tax free. Some states may have a limit on the quantities or dollar limits on computers. You can easily save $100-200 in taxes that weekend plus get free shipping. Great time to buy refurbed equipment.

Apples and oranges. If they have a presence in your state, you are supposed to pay sales tax. If you buy from out of state and sales tax is not collected, you are supposed to pay Use Tax to your state department of revenue. Charging a flat tax of 8% to all buyers fits neither of these models. I'd say what they are doing borders on illegal.
