Al Book requires repeated keypress to poweron, asks to shutdown/restart when awakened

Howdy,

I have a Al Book 1.25ghz in front of me that requires you to press a key (any key) repeatedly after pressing the power button, otherwise it does not power on. A seemingly related problem is that when the system is awakened from sleep (by closing the lid) the Shutdown/Restart dialog box comes up as if I've told it to shut down.

PRAM has been zapped, PMU has been reset. Any suggestions?
