Last night before I went to bed, I had about 90% battery and my usage was about 1.5 hours. This morning my battery was about 30% and my usage was 8.5 hours. I had set an alarm. This is the second time this has happened, I had no idea what caused it the first time, but I think I've figured out that the alarm clock is running in the background.

original 8GB iPhone, WiFi off, and my email doesnt auto-check.

Anyone else have this problem, or know of a way to fix it?

Not sure if the battery issue and the alarm clock are related, but obviously the alarm clock needs to run in the background, otherwise, no alarm.

I noticed it too.

I have only used the alarm once without having the phone on the charger, and the battery life was crap.

I have used the alarm function of the iPhone since I first got the original. I used it every day except weekends for school and job-related functions. Never once has it drained my batter more then the normal. The alarm is not the issue at all.

I have a 3g, not a first gen, but I have my alarm always on. I use it to wake me up for work, and I have it set to go off every weekday. I leave it set all the time so I don't need to worry about forgetting to set it. So, with it on all the time, I've never noticed any problem with battery life? Certainly nothing like you are describing.

I doubt that's the problem. I have 2 alarms set to wake me up in the morning. When I get up, I leave them on so they can work the next morning.

In other words, my alarm is ALWAYS set. I'm pretty happy with my battery life. It's normal, is what I mean.

What everyone else is saying, its not the alarm app.
I have 4 daily alarms set and 2 weekend alarms and my usage doest NOT reflect them running 24x7.
This is on both First and 2nd gen phones.

Same here. I have not noticed my alarm being detrimental to my battery life.

what else could it be then? I understand the app needs to run (with an alarm being set obviously), but the usage went up by ~7 hours (the time i was asleep). Its not just the battery life, its the usage thats bothering me as well. I am going to set another alarm tonight and see what happens

Search the past 2 months of the forums. I have no clue what is causing this, but I recall a couple threads with this EXACT same problem (phone showing constant use overnight).

Perhaps there are answers there, I never read the entire threads, so I don't know.

Did you have Location Services turned on? Lots of prior posters have pointed out that this uses a lot of juice...

I've had this problem a few times and could never figure out what causes it. Overnight the usage time would equal the standby time. But for me turning the phone off and back on seems to re-set whatever was running and draining the battery.

Oh and I haven't used the alarm clock at all so it isn't that.

Just to chime in (pun intended), I use the alarm clock every day and I don't notice any unusual battery drainage.

It has to be something else. I also use the alarm function every day (set overnight and at random intervals through the day). Its never made a noticeable decrease in the battery life.

No, Location Services was turned off. Set an alarm, and battery was where it was last night.

Weird that it happened twice, but no big deal I guess.

My alarm is always on. Sometimes I get 4 days of standby and 6 hours of usage before my phone dies.

That is weird because I use my alarm everyday and leave it on all the time and have never had a problem with the battery draining. When I woke up yesterday (the same day you had your problem) my battery was abot 30% as well.

I was in Airplane Mode from midnight to 9am. I had two alarms set. I have a jailbreak battery application that indicated 100% Full with 3 min usage and 9 hours standby. My battery went to 98% after I turned Airplane Off and checked email once.

First, I'll echo everyone else. I too use the alarm every day. I typically charge at night, but, e.g. if I'm at my gf's house and forgot my charger, the battery is fairly low (40%) by the evening, and it sits running off battery, and even checking e-mail every 15 minutes, and yet it not only survives to the morning to give its alarm but also gives me an hour of music listening to the iPod on the train and bus home, and it's survived that scenario every time that's happened, so far.

Weird that it happened twice, but no big deal I guess.

Egh, there is an issue with the firmware, I think that's the long and short of it. Numerous people have been watching their usage time and battery life and reporting anomalies like this. I wouldn't get too into chasing it down, because I think you're on the wrong path. On the other hand, if you think you get better battery life without the alarm and you can get by without the alarm, meh, go ahead and turn it off, non?

I use the alarm clock on a fairly regular basis, and its only happened twice. I'm not too concerned with it, I was just wondering if the same thing had happened to anyone else.

Not really a big deal, hopefully it all gets fixed on Tuesday, lol
