Alarm: iPhone must be turned on?

This is probably a dumb question, but am I right that the iPhone has to be "ON" to use the alarm?

I switched from a BlackBerry, and you could have it turned Off, but the alarm would still work.

you can put the iphone to sleep and the alarms will work

but if you turn the phone all the way off, it won't wake up.
