Alesis Micron synth and Garageband

Hi,
I have an iMac and an alesis micron synth which I want to connect to Garageband as a controller to play the GB library soft synths and also to record from the Micron itself. Do I need to buy an audio interface for this or do I need to just buy a midi to usb cable? Is the interface relevant and vital to do what I want to do as I also want to connect my mic and guitar up to GB occasionally too.
