I've just recently moved from El Capitan to High Sierra and have noticed an interesting, and nice, improvement I've not heard anything about - the size of aliases. Up until HS these Apple-flavored soft links were pretty hefty, on the order of a MB or more. I started making copies of files less than a MB rather than an alias in order to save space. I just noticed today that under HS these are now down to where you'd like them to be, in the 1 kB range. Must be due to changes in APFS. Anyone seen anything about this?
