SUMMARY:
Suddenly EVERY file in my downloads is "in use" and cannot be opened or deleted.

Full Story
My ridiculously old Macbook finally started giving me the "startup disc is full message."

I've been purging various items, and just came across my downloads folder.

I went through the folder and pulled out some files and successfully deposited a few in the trash.

I went to trash the rest of the files, but I started getting the message "some of the items you are using are in use by another application...."

When I try to open any of the files in my downloads, it says it cannot be opened because it is "in use by Mac OS X."

I have shut down all applications and restarted my computer twice. This is happening with every file, even 3 yr old word documents.

Any input would be great. (Tech savvy-ness is not that great, but I can follow instructions like a champ.)
