All four iPhone 17 models launching later this year will feature an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera, according to analyst Jeff Pu.

In a research note today with investment firm GF Securities, Pu shared a chart in which he reiterated that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max will each be equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera. By comparison, all four iPhone 16 models are equipped with a 12-megapixel front camera.

Another analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, also claimed that at least one iPhone 17 model would be equipped with a 24-megapixel front camera, so this upgrade has been rumored by multiple sources. Kuo said it will "significantly improve the image quality."

With a higher 24-megapixel resolution, photos can maintain their quality even when cropped to a greater degree, providing more flexibility in post-processing.

Pu reiterated other iPhone 17 rumors, including an increased 12GB of RAM and a 48-megapixel Telephoto camera for the Pro and Pro Max models. He also expects the A19 and A19 Pro chips to use TSMC's newer third-generation 3nm process, known as N3P.

All four iPhone 17 models are expected to launch in September.

I suspect Apple will attempt to actually try to match competitors hardware specs on things like megapixel counts and more. They are under pressure with Apple intelligence being largely a gimmick (genmoji), broken (news summaries), or vaporware (personalized Siri).

The main selling point for the 16 were these features. They won’t get away with it again.

They could’ve gone for 48 instead of 24
By also making the front camera ultrawide

That way they could use the 48mp resolution for full ultrawide shots or crop to 24mp in normal mode but nope

They’ll do 48mp front on iPhone 19 or something

I’ve got an iPhone 15 Pro Max and a Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Pixel has a 48 MP selfie camera, a 48 MP Ultra Wide camera, a 48 MP Tele camera, and a 50 MP Wide Octa camera. Basically, I get a sneak peek of the future Apple iPhone lenses before they adopt them. However, I don’t think Apple will have 48 MP selfie cameras for a while, maybe 2 or 3 years.

I disagree. Did you buy a 16? I did, and I did not consider any of the things you listed as even remotely being "The main selling point..." or even secondary or tertiary selling points.

Will be great to have improvements to the front facing camera. This along with the 48 megapixel telephoto lens for the Pro Max should make it a really nice upgrade for the 17 Pro Max

The only time I ever need a front camera is for face verification when setting up a financial app or anything like that. And even that would work with a back camera. The idea to have a hole in the screen for a camera still seems crazy for me.

Where are the Apple fans explaining us how there is no point having more pixels and that 12 megapixels is the absolute best resolution? 🤣

You’ll find that a little of people use apps like Zoom or Teams (or in the states a thing called FaceTime). To them it’d be crazy NOT to have a front facing camera.

Front camera = selfies, more megapixels = larger photo size, lots and lots of selfies = huge photo library.... which requires more storage. Apple genius.
There is a setting that gives you the option of 12MP or 24MP. They may apply that to the front camera as well. Personally I’m always eager for better quality photos.

While that's good for the front facing camera but what about the main rear camera? (the most important camera on the phone for filming/stills in general) That was rumoured last year to be getting a slightly larger new sensor module but didn't happen eventually with the 16 series as the module apparently was released after production of the 16 series of Iphones had began, it is definitely available now for inclusion in the 17 series. The promise was that module would improve low light filming further on the main rear camera. So far I've seen no mention of that newer camera module appearing on the 17 series Iphones. In the case of the telephoto going from 12 to 48 megapixels this year, are we just getting smaller pixels or is that sensor increasing in size. It seems a lot of focus has been on the arrangement of the rear cameras which to me should only be based on function rather than whether it does or doesn't like like another phone, or as has been commented elsewhere will mean the phone doesn't balance well when resting on a table (does that really matter?). It would have been good to hear that any camera keeping the same megapixels this year will be replaced with a slightly newer larger senser module even at the expense of overall phone weight. With the Iphone Air coming there should be no weight restrictions for the other models.

For those of us who purchased an iPhone from the iPhone 16 lineup, thanks to Apple’s intelligence, we should be eligible for a complimentary upgrade to the equivalent model in the iPhone 17 lineup.
