Just upgraded to ios 5....and really miss the notification system i had on my JB 4.3. My iphone is forever getting muted by accident and the mute notification was fantastic...every other phone in the known universe displays mute as an icon on the homescreen...apple can be so frustrating some times...always at least one major omission : (

There is a hardware mute button, the phone vibrates when you toggle it to mute and a red dot shows when mute is on.

That's not a bad amount of indication that your phone is on mute.

Totally agree with the OP. Anywhere dark and you have to unmute and mute to check it's muted. And the physical mute switch is awful design - so easy to accidentally switch when in ones pocket or bag.

Why NOT have a small mute icon? What is Apples reason for not having one.

The hardware mute switch is awesome. I would never want to trade that for a software solution. I guess after using an iPhone for years, I can tell if the device is muted or not just by feeling the location of the switch.

Try working in the Film industry and having your muted phone unmute itself in your pocket and then go off during a take. It's happened to me twice so now I always have to go into the menus and turn all the tones off - very annoying.

You could just use the vol- button to turn the ringer down... Just as good.

I see what you're saying though.

- I've actually got so used to the 'mute switch' I can feel whether it's on or off. I guess you get used to something after years and years of use!

Get a bumper or any hard case, this will recess the switch.

Does a cellphone going off in the background of a porn really matter that much;)

Ok, if its in your pocket or bag...how would having a hardware or software mute button differ?

i didnt realise how fantastic a mute icon was until i got one with noticeboard...im happy to loose JB now we have Lock screen notification and hotspots....but im really gonna miss the mute icon...and ive had an iphone for 3 years and still get surprise muted all the time...might not be such a problem now we have notifications....i think the blackberry style notifications really help.

i have never ever had the mute switch change whilst being in my pocket....not even my 3GS.

i not interested in a software mute...just a tiny bell with a line through it at the top next to the battery and blue tooth.
