All I'm trying to do is add a ringtone from iTunes and when I try to sync it says " Are you sure you want to sync ringtones? All existing songs, movies and TV shows on the iPhone will be removed." Uhhhh what, just to add a ringtone..?

Are you trying this on a different computer than you normally sync with? With the normal set up, your iPhone will sync with one iTunes library (such as your home computer). If you try to sync with another computer (such as one at work) you may get this message.

You can try checking the box in iTunes that says something like "manage library manually." You will find it once you plug in your iPhone and see the general iPhone summary information.
