All-in-One G3 for a High School Student.

My Wife's younger brother will start his Senior Year at a Boarding School this August. She was lucky enough to get an All-in-One G3 free for him this morning, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

Are there any oddities I should know about this model?

I'm going to see how much RAM I can throw into it, and try 10.2.8 on it.
Should I just stick with 9? I guess I'll try a few things out.

you should probably stick with 9.

10.2 rarely has any apps compared to 9 - mainly because companies made their apps 10.3 compatible and dropped 10.2 support.
