More than eight years after it introduced the technology, the entire new iPhone lineup features ProMotion display technology for the first time.

ProMotion is Apple's name for its adaptive display technology that makes motion on screen appear smoother and more responsive. Apple introduced ProMotion with the second-generation iPad Pro in June 2017.

On iPhones, ProMotion arrived later with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max in September 2021. MacBook Pro models with Liquid Retina XDR displays also adopted ProMotion in October 2021.

Since the technology came to the iPhone in 2021, it has been reserved for the Pro models until now; both the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air feature ProMotion displays.

ProMotion works by allowing the screen to refresh up to 120 times per second when fast motion is shown, such as during scrolling or gaming, and dropping the refresh rate to much lower levels when the image is static to save battery life.

Well, it’s either wait for another year or find an iPhone Pro 16 Max quickly before they disappear. I’m not buying a phone with an aluminum case. I don’t care how strong the aluminum is, it’s not as strong as titanium.

Going from a 256Gb 15 Pro here to a basic 17 by the looks. No reason to buy the Pro as I have a mirrorless camera that covers the long reach if I need it.

Literally no difference apart from cost and weight and both of those are negatives for the Pro.

That is the only feature I wish the 16e had when I bought it. Nice that entire lineup so far will have it. It will be curious to see if the 17e will have the feature when it comes out next year. My guess is that it most likely won't.

The Air is still an option for you

The case material doesn’t matter.

Great to see ProMotion for the base model and of course the always on display. Should have been there a few years ago!

Surprised Apple did this honestly. ProMotion is the main reason why I stick with the pro models. Definitely considering an iPhone Air to upgrade from my 15 Pro

The iPhone 17 will be a bestseller this year.

The starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro in the US is 38% higher than the iPhone 17 ($1,099 vs. $799). The price difference in Poland is even greater (5,799 PLN vs. 3,999 PLN). That's a whopping 45% more than the base model! I can see no reason to buy the Pro.

The 17 is truly a great package this time. No huge reasons to get the Air or the Pros over this. And it’s the cheapest!
Yep. I was all set to get my first Pro ever in BLACK. Saw the Pro line up and went...wat.

Then I cross referenced the 16, 17 and 17 Pro on the compare site on Apple and there is no reason to get a Pro over a 17.
