I have successfully used All2mp3 several times. But I tried just now to convert a m4a song to mp3. The conversion created an mp3 file but with zero bytes.

It's possible the m4a file is corrupt. You can try other apps, such as blueroom's XLD recommendation, or try simply renaming the file, changing the .m4a extension to .mp3.
