Allow higher resolutions over HDMI?

Does anyone here know of a way to force OSX to allow resolutions greater than 1920x1080/1200 over HDMI? I know it's not a hardware limitation because when I boot into windows, I can use 2560x1440 via HDMI just fine. It seems OSX treats all HDMI devices as TVs
