None of us in my household could get on with the black ATV remote.
It’s utterly useless, but then I found a solution which works for most of us fairly successfully...

I now tap the remote with my thumb instead of sliding across the surface.

Navigation is much more controlled now

Still slide to go back 10seconds though!
 
The tap works in some situations, as it simulates a D-pad. But it is still not a D-pad.

I wish if you tap the edge and kept your thumb there, it would keep scrolling in that direction, as if you were pressing a direction on a real remote.

I have many, many photos, and using my thumb to swipe to scroll takes way too long and it always ends up going past the point I wanted to stop anyways.
