I currently use Catalina on my iMac and wanted to do a clean install as I have not done one in a couple years.

I used Internet Recovery to erase my iMacs internal SSD and then proceeded to reinstall Catalina through Internet Recovery.

I started to copy of files from my backup drive and noticed I was getting a "Not Enough Disk Space" for files over 20 GB. I then went into Disk Utility, and I see I only have 5GB of free space even though I have barely even copied over any of my backup files (maybe about 40 GB so far) when my SSD is 700+ GB.

Any idea what has happened?

Alright so I made things worse.

I figured maybe I just erased the Mac system partition and not the use data partition so I went into Internet recovery again, removed the data partition and now, I’m not sure how to add it back.

When I exit dusk utility to try to install Catalina, it shows the HD disk but when I click on it I get an error.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Well Apple support helped me fix the disk issue. Had to show all volumes and had to repair each volume in ascending order and I was able to erase and setup the disk.

Installing Catalina a second time today and hopefully I’ll have access to the full 700+ GB on the ssd.

That being said, the fact I can call apple, get a support rep in 5 min to get assistance on a late 2012 iMac reaffirms my belief it’s worth paying into the apple ecosystem.
