"Alt" and "Ctrl" Key in Firefox

I'm running Rikaichan, a Japanese-English dictionary plugin in Firefox. I can call it up using a user defined key setting using "Ctrl", "Alt", and/or "Shift" key. The problem is that the only key combinations that work are ones involving "Shift". Those involving the "Ctrl" or "Alt" key don't do anything. Does anyone know why the above mentioned keys don't work in Firefox?
