How can I alter the path variable?
For example how can I change the sequence of the directories in the path variable?

I have seen these threads already but I have not seen how to change the sequence of the directories.

The sequence is exactly the order in the list. To change it you simply follow any one of those threads to set the variable to the list in a different order.
