I'm currently running my 5120x2880 27" iMac at default resolution - looks like 2560x1440. However, I would prefer to run a lower scaled resolution. Unfortunately the next step down is 2048x1152, which renders all the screen elements and fonts too big. I also note they have standard and low resolution versions, and the low resolution versions are pretty bad looking.

If I were to install software to run it at some intermediate resolution, are there any compatibility issues with Monterey or Ventura? Also, do you get the proper Retina scaling and not the "low resolution" type scaling? Or do you get native resolution with tiny fonts?

I was thinking of something like 2304x1296 or 2432x1368. I'm a little hesitant to install software though since the last time I used SwitchResX on a different machine a long time ago, I screwed up my displays settings somehow which caused incompatibilities with external displays.

I think something like SwitchResX is your only option.
